Gm Engineering Jobs – University of California, Berkeley student Ryan Kussner could have landed a high-paying job at an innovative California technology company this summer, but he chose to come to Dearborn for an internship at Ford Motor Company instead.
Costner, 21, is not interested in Silicon Valley, despite his emphasis on studying mechanical engineering and technology. He and many college students like him like to ride with the car company.

“One of my good friends, he’s an electrical engineer, he’s never driven a wrench in his life, but he loves the idea of autonomous vehicles,” Kusner said. “I grew up working on cars, I’m also interested in AV. I’m a gearhead and he’s a techie, but we’re both landing in the same place in AV.”

Kusner Paul, a fellow Berkeley student, interned at General Motors last summer. GM and Ford are increasingly hiring students right out of high school and hope to hire many after they graduate. Both companies are increasingly attracting interns from prestigious universities, as their push technologies, including electric vehicles and AVs, have not been followed by Fiat Chrysler.
Both companies have demonstrated their prowess in recruiting college students, resulting in fierce competition for top talent against each other and Silicon Valley firms.
“It used to be, we’d do anything just to fill those slots,” said Michael Arena, GM’s chief talent officer. “But our reputation has changed and our relationship on campus has improved. We know we are now at the top of every university.”

Let’s take a look at how Ford and GMuse internships can provide students with jobs that test their skills with the ultimate goal of securing the best placement.
Five years ago, GM struggled to bring together 400 interns and co-op students each summer. Many of whom have been attracted by inappropriate schools.
Fast forward to the final fall. About 11,000 students applied to GM from universities across the country, including Ivy League schools, for the chance to intern in Detroit for the summer. They endure a rigorous interview process to win one of only 620 openings.

Take Caroline Wade, 21, a Duke University senior interning in finance at the GM Technology Center in Warren this summer. He submitted his resume to GM last fall. GM Hera conducted several interviews before conducting the fictitious case study. He had to create a financial model and analyze it, then propose a solution. If he passes, he will get an offer to intern at GM, he said.
Then, she got a call from a GM representative.” She said, ‘Carly, I have good news.’ I was in Duke’s cafeteria and I was so excited.”
Most GM interns will receive full-time job offers at the end of their 10- to 12-week internships, said Arena, who declined to provide exact figures.

Wade sweats again, hoping that on the last day of his internship, August 3rd, he will receive a full-time job offer.
Students said GMpas pays its interns and co-ops $20 to $33 an hour, but that’s a far cry from Silicon Valley companies that typically pay $40 to $45 an hour. Ford leaders declined to say what the interns are paid, but both GM and Ford pay for out-of-state housing for interns.
Internship programs are important feeders for temporary, full-time jobs for both companies. In fact, according to GM’s 2017 Sustainability Report, every 26 minutes GM hires a full-time worker from the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

The GM recruitment has been successful in its 2013 decision to reduce the number of recruited “strategic campuses” from 30 to 18. Few schools allow GMtofocus efforts and build strong relationships on campus, Arena said.
“Each year a team of GM employees is assigned to the core schools led by an executive,” said Arena. , so we can create a network that continues to evolve.”
Arena said GM is competing for talent against Ford, Apple and Google, to name a few. So GM uses its work in EV and AV technology to position itself as a tech company on campus.

“That means we move a little bit further away from the Midwest and toward the coast,” Arena said. “More than half of our total employees are from outside of Michigan. At most, it’s coming from the coast. That’s what we used to hire from Michigan and that’s it.”
Arena said many of GM’s interns now come from prestigious schools such as Berkeley, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Harvard University, Duke University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan and Michigan State. are
Ford had about 580 interns this summer, most doing 12-week internships. Lena Allison, Ford’s US. Talent Acquisition Manager

But, like GM, Ford is more adept at finding top interns. It’s better for Ford’s mission and promotes the idea of an internship as a permanent job, says Allison, who was a Ford intern himself 27 years ago.
“They realize they’re not here for the short term,” Allison said. “They know we’re very interested in them, we give them sweet assignments. They’re not just here to drink coffee, they’re here to talk.”
Ellison declined to say how many Ford summer interns he typically hires, but described it as “a very large number.” About half of Ford’s interns come from out-of-state universities, and Ford has increasingly looked to schools like Stanford, Berkeley. , MIT and University of Notre Dame.

Ellison said the company studies data to determine which schools it has historically hired the best talent with the highest level of skills.
“We also have a big social media campaign,” Allison said. “We reach out to candidates … and we use our interns and new hires to help us with videos. They talk about why they love Ford and what they’ve done here. “
To compete with tech companies and other automakers, Ford strives to be “the most trusted mobility company in the world,” Ellison said.

That image resonates with Brian Blankenship, 20, who will be a senior at Berkeley this fall. “Returning lucrative offers from tech companies that are willing to pay more than $40 an hour is just insane,” he said. Instead, Blankenship, a mechanical engineering and computer science major, is part of Ford’s sustainability, environmental and safety engineering department.
“When I was interviewing, Ford talked about the company’s ethics, which I don’t hear from tech companies,” Blankenship said. “Ford focused on ethical business practices rather than wooing me with a salary.”
GM has redesigned its workplaces in recent years at its proven bases in Detroit’s Renaissance Center, Warren’s Tech Center and Milford. Ford recently purchased Michigan Central Station in Detroit’s hip Corktown neighborhood with plans to renovate it and convert it into an AV/ EV Campus. It is also in the process of relocating its Dearborn offices. Companies want to offer young people collaborative open spaces rather than the blocks of cubical walls. Most interns embrace the environment.

“I’m into open concept spaces, big long tables and monitors that you can connect your screens to,” says GM’s Caroline Wade. “It’s really cool. By the end of my first day, I knew everyone.”
Parker Strong, 23, is a senior at Brigham Young University who interned at GM’s Detroit headquarters in marketing. He had offers from five different companies, all outside of automotive. Hechose GM because he wants to have access to executives for networking, to be treated like an employee and to give difficult assignments. Then, there are trucks.
“When I walked through the doors of the Renaissance Center, I was blown away. They had Truck Month and all the models were great to see,” Strong said. “I like trucks.”

Costner tests electrical systems in Ford’s product development group. There, it’s still conservative compared to the San Francisco tech company where his friend is an intern, who serves free lunches and plays table tennis to relieve stress.
“There’s no ping pong table,” Kousner joked. “I work in Cube City and they just implemented free coffee. It’s a traditional company, but I like it. It feels more organized.”
Word of mouth and personal experience speed up the hiring process at both companies. For example, GM tells potential interns that CEO Mary Barra was a colleague at a GM manufacturing plant 30 years ago as an engineer. Similarly, GM product boss Mark Reeves started out as a GM intern.

In fact, bars sometimes help with recruitment. Carolyn Wade and a group of Duke students visited GM last year as part of a recruiting effort.
“Finally, Mary Barra took 10 minutes out of her day to talk to us,” Wade said. “I wanted to do management consulting and thought I would apply to other companies, but after the field trip to GM, I put all my eggs in one basket. I was excited to work there.”
Georgia Tech senior Darren Ozturk, 21, said conversations with other Georgia Tech students who had internships at GM convinced him to choose GM over two other companies.

“They worked with cool vehicles and had experience,” said Ozturk, who works on autonomous vehicles at the GM Tech Center in Warren. He is living in a Sterling Heights apartment paid for by GM.
Ozturk is majoring in computer engineering. When he first arrived at GM in May,
