Engineering Job Titles Hierarchy
An organization’s job titles are usually closely related to these 6 main levels. Large organizations become more complex. The US federal government has 15 job grades with 10 steps each.

The job title is at the top of the C-Suite. The CEO (Chief Executive Officer) usually leads all other people with C-level titles as well as the CEO if there is one.
Sometimes (usually during a transition period), the CEO may report to both the board and the CEO, as is the case with Disney CEO Bob Chapek.

Here is an example organizational chart of C-level management positions you might find at a large company:
Check out 20 C-Level Titles [with Description] for a comprehensive list of C-Suite job titles.
Note: Some industries use different job titles for leadership. For example, nonprofit organizations often refer to their leader as the CEO. And healthcare companies sometimes use chief medical officer and chief clinical officer for their #1 role.

People with individual contributor (IC) job titles often represent the largest group in an organization. IC job titles vary by department and often include a qualifier such as:
Smaller companies often do not have such entry-level programs and may forgo such entry-level titles altogether. They can use individual contributor type job titles as entry titles instead (eg Marketing Specialist, HR Generalist, Sales Associate, etc.).
Another common entry-level job title is “assistant” (HR assistant, sales assistant, marketing assistant, etc.). The job board actually had 309,198 jobs with the title “Assistant” as of March 26, 2020. However, some assistant titles require some experience. Executive assistants for large companies are usually reserved for someone who has previously been an executive assistant or has industry experience.
