Chemical engineers support research and development in a wide variety of industries. Working in R&D gives ChE an opportunity to shape the future.
In part one of our series on chemical engineering careers, we discussed traditional process engineering jobs. Process engineers who work in plant or engineering environments often begin their careers after graduation. R&D engineers often have advanced degrees and specialize in specific fields, some of which are far from chemistry. The 2021 salary survey indicated that 45% of respondents had a bachelor’s degree, while 33% had a doctorate. Often these PhD students work in research and development.
